Frequently Asked Questions

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

Depending on the stage you are at, you may or may not notice any symptoms. Frequent signs of periodontal disease include:

  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Redness and swelling
  • Bleeding
  • Pain when chewing
  • Tenderness around the gums
  • Gum recession

Is scaling and root planing the same as a regular dental cleaning?

No — while we recommend all of our patients get routine cleanings at least twice yearly, scaling and root planing therapy (also known as deep cleaning) is only recommended for patients who have been diagnosed with gum disease. Unlike regular cleanings, this procedure removes plaque and tartar from teeth below the gum line, allowing them to heal properly.

What periodontal treatment is best for me?

When it comes to gum disease, there’s no one-size-fits-all treatment. When you come to see us, your dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth and use advanced technology to properly diagnose your condition. Then, they will recommend a treatment plan according to your needs.

I have gum disease — will I need antibiotics?

Not necessarily — gum disease can often be treated without using antibiotics. However, if your dentist at Doyle Family Dentistry believes it’s necessary, they may recommend antibiotic therapy.

Will insurance cover the cost of periodontal treatment?

Every insurance policy is different, so please contact us to find out what your plan includes.

Don’t worry if you don’t have dental insurance! Doyle Dental Care, our in-house savings program ($399/year for adults), can help you save 15% on your treatment!
